A natural menopause will take place over many years and can begin when a woman is in her 30s (rare) until her 50s/60s, so symptoms can be experienced for as long as 12 to 15 years. Woman can also be subjected to surgical menopause for medical reasons at any age.
Perimenopause is when your body makes the natural transition to menopause, continuing to ovulate but your hormone (estrogen) levels and periods will become irregular and you may start to experience symptoms of the menopause. Once you have gone through 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period you have officially reached the menopause and the perimenopause has ended, you are now postmenopause. |

Traditionally women have been given hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and although this has the advantage of helping reduce symptoms and the chances of osteoporosis, it can increase the risk of breast cancer and does not address the psychological changes.
